Savage - a new page in Irish cinema

Well, well, well. Just in the door this second from the latest offering of Irish cinema. I must say, we have come along way. Earlier on today, I saw the trailer for a new Irish thriller called Savage, on the Cineworld website and was intrigued straight away. The first thing I felt was sense of realism and grittiness. Nevertheless, I've being fooled by many a trailer before. The story as outlined is of a man mugged on the streets of a city and how he deals with the experience afterwards.

The film takes you there pretty much straight away. Its cinematography style reminded me of 28 Days Later. Before I knew it I found myself empathising with the main character, played by Darren Healy. The journey is quite intense and one that at times feels too close to the bone. Healy plays the role masterfully. The other characters in the storyline seem translucent in comparison. Perhaps this is done purposely, strengthening the sense of loneliness felt by the main protagonist.

The movie follows the main character Paul as he tries to overcome his ordeal of being attacked and moving on with his life. The journey of Paul moves through 3 states from Fear to Anger to Revenge. It does this incredibly well with Healy being pivotal to the audience engagement. The movie does seem to loose pace around half way through and then picks up again. This movie can be described as intense, brutal and gritty. As the trailer truly points out 'Reminiscent of Scorsese's Taxi Driver' this movie is not for the light hearted.

As the credits began to role, I proclaimed WTF as the lights came on. There was a sort of shocked silence by the small gathering in the cinema. I looked to the lads sitting beside me and there was a kind of shocked laugh between us. The lads on the row behind suggested we leave the cinema together. Brendan Muldowney has done a fantastic job with this one and I'll be watching closely for both his and Healy's next appearance. Two incredibly promising individuals in Ireland's film industry. If you are brave enough, definitely check this one out.
